It depends on the number of endpoints or integrations, how well documented the other systems are, data volumes, and security needs. A single integration with a well-documented service is quick; older systems take longer. As a guide, a single third-party integration usually costs $3,000 to $12,000, and a full public or partner API with gateway, docs and several integrations $20,000 to $80,000 or more (USD).
REST suits most public and partner APIs because it is simple, cacheable and widely understood. GraphQL suits apps that need flexible data from many sources in one request, such as a web and mobile front end. Many systems use both. We recommend one based on who will call the API.
Often, yes. Options include reading from a database view, exchanging files over SFTP, using an integration platform, or as a last resort automating the user interface. We pick the most reliable option and explain the trade-offs.
We use OAuth 2.0 or API keys with scoped permissions, validate every input, apply rate limits, encrypt traffic, log access and test against the OWASP API Security Top 10. Secrets are kept in a vault, not in code.
